Diversity and Inclusion in Education
From Closed Doors to Open Arms
Diversity and inclusion, while a core value in western education systems, has only started to become more widely discussed in China in recent years. Chinese students as a whole display a wide range of diversity in various areas, which meaningfully influence their educational experiences and outcomes. The Chinese education system needs to become more responsive to these differences. China’s educators ought to be equipped with the abilities to understand, appreciate, and effectively address diversity, to combat prejudice and discrimination against special populations, and to teach by the principles of equity and individualization. The panel focused on two specific types of diversity—neurodiversity, and LGBTQ+, and discuss how and why China should raise awareness on the educational needs of these special populations as it embarks on the transformation into a more inclusive education system.

An Analysis of International Higher Education from a Micro-Macro Perspective
With globalization and China’s rapid economic development, the Higher Education Panel discussed the role of Chinese higher education in the 21st Century with the theme of “Inheritance and Innovation in Higher Education.” Throughout history, China has had a long-standing emphasis on education. Within the past century, Chinese students have studied abroad in countries and regions all over the world. What role would Chinese higher education play in the 21st Century? We will invite leaders, scholars and outstanding students from traditional and innovative universities at home and abroad to discuss the following issues from both students’ personal growth and macro education policy. How to combat the idea of students and parents that admission to a university is the ultimate goal of life? How to cultivate the comprehensive development of talents needed in the 21st Century? How to continuously improve practitioners’ professional development in higher education? How can Chinese universities stand out in the context of international higher education?

Internationalization of Chinese K12 Schools: Opportunities and Challenges
Increasing internationalization of K12 education in China partly due to its continuous national economic prosperity and overall educational development. In line with the new national educational mandate and the huge market demand, more and more private schools are adopting internationalized and bilingual curriculum while international schools in China pay special attention to integrating Chinese culture and China’s national curriculum into existing curriculum. For many private schools in China, they are required to abide by the compulsory education policy and tempted to moving toward more internationalization, which is a common conundrum facing K12 schools. This panel invited four well-renowned and highly respected researchers and educators to share their insights on challenges and opportunities in internationalization of Chinese K-12 schools.
