Nature-based Education

As the implementation of the “Double Reduction” policy goes on, children have more free time outside school. Thus nature-based education has received much attention in China. By the end of 2018, mainland China has 418 educational institutions that promote nature-based education. Such passion for nature is evident in Chinese culture: the idiom “unity of man and nature” and the Taoism that emphasizes harmony between humans and nature. In fact, many parents who were born in the 1970s and 1980s still remember their childhood time spent on tree climbing, playing with mud, and catching crickets. But what is nature-based education? How does it support children’s development in cognitive ability and emotion? Through the discussion of education experts and front-line practitioners, we hope to answer the following questions: (i) what is the relation between playing and learning in children’s development (ii) how to deliver nature-based education within the school (iii) how to customize nature-based education to suit Chinese students and Chinese culture.

Multimodal Learning

Multimodal learning is a hot subject in education. Its purpose is to develop a more diverse learning environment by employing various sensors (seeing, hearing, doing, and touching). The pandemic and the consequential online teaching have posed a huge challenge in language teaching. Verbal and written communication uses a range of symbols and modes, providing lots of resources for language education. At the same time, online teaching provides an opportunity for multimedia education. In this warm-up event, you will hear from scholars and practitioners in language education about their understanding of multimodal learning and their experience in this area.

Interactive Event: “Education in My Eyes”

Education is with us throughout our lives and is omnipresent in different forms. We might feel its power in moments we are not even aware of. This special event is precisely such a trip to discover various forms of education in our daily life. With the aim to inspire a fresh understanding of education, we will invite the general public to share on social media platforms their moments of encountering education in life. Through these moments, they might realize that schools aside, families and society are also crucial parts of the educational ecosystem. Leveraging on the new media, we hope this special event could disseminate this message further, calling on people to attach greater importance to education. As a result, more opportunities in education may arise.

Inspire New Understanding of Education: Using social media (CES official accounts including WeChat, Weibo, and Bilibili), we aim to explore a more diversified definition of education. We have invited several experts and Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) to share their unique insights in the field of education. Interview videos are compiled and shared with the public on the online platforms. Through interaction with the audience directly on social media, we hope to awaken more people to realise that education is within their reach, it is omnipresent and colourful.

Expand Career Possibilities of Education: As society evolves, education has taken on a more innovative form. lt takes place in various settings, it involves various kinds of informal educators rather than mere lecturers, and it passes on more knowledge and skills than the formula and theorems listed in textbooks. Although somewhat different from our conventional understanding, these new forms are equally important and impactful. Therefore, we decided to uncover the true meaning of education through different angles, to explore from family, school, and society's perspectives to see how these spectrums differ from one another. By doing so, we hope to provide education practitioners with fresh thinking, allowing them to discover their career possibilities in the education sector.

Discover the Wonderful Life: Capturing educational moments and discovering the beauty in life is what we hope our audience could experience through this event. Our event invites people around the globe to share their memorable moments of education. By reading other people's stories, people will be able to witness diversified settings where education takes place, as well as various education approaches, ideologies, and stakeholders, many of which were not commonly conceived to be so before. Through "Education in My Eyes", we hope our audience could develop a wider perspective on education and discover the educational perspectives in every aspect of our lives.
